The event thoroughly tests retrievers in both field trial and hunt tests, with a goal of finding the dog that excels in both venues and earning the distinction of being named the World Retriever Champion.

In keeping with this spirit of testing, The World Retriever Championship utilizes four judges, two from field trial backgrounds and two from hunt test backgrounds. These judges shall set up challenging tests that are true to each sport. There will be a total of four field trial series and four hunt test series consisting of marks and possibly blinds, with two additional series designated as combined blind series only, for a total of at least 10 series. Scoring (cumulative) will be immediately revealed at the conclusion of each dog's performance as the Committee seeks to provide an "Olympics" type atmosphere.

The World Retriever Championship will award more than $36,000 in cash and prizes through four places, including $25,000 cash for 1st place.
