Troubleshooting
I have more than one dog, but only one dog with a barking problem. Will it cause problems between the dogs if I keep them together?

It should not be a problem, especially if you follow the procedures described in this guide.

Is it possible for my dog to learn not to bark only when the NoBark is on?

Yes. This is best accomplished by placing the collar on your dog only in situations where you never want him to bark, and never placing the collar on your dog in situations where you find it acceptable for him to bark. You should never let your dog wear the collar when it’s okay for him to bark, such as when you are playing or training or when you want him to be a watchdog.

My dog keeps barking and does not respond to the correction.
  • Test the collar by putting it in test mode and saying “Test” loudly into the speaker. The LED light should flash, meaning the collar is working properly....

Will another dog that is barking cause the bark control collar to accidentally correct my dog?

The NoBark 10R collar detects both the vibration of your dog’s vocal chords and the sound of his unique bark. These collars won’t activate if they only detect the sound of another dog’s bark.

FAQ
Can I attach a leash, rope, or chain to the bark control collar?

We recommend you do not attach these to a bark control collar. This can result in pulling the contact points too tightly against your dog’s neck. Attach a leash to a separate, nonmetallic collar, making sure the extra collar does not put pressure on the contact points.

Can I leave the collar on 24 hours a day?

We recommend wearing the collar no more than 8-10 hours a day to prevent a condition called pressure necrosis. To prevent injury to your pet, please read and follow this important safety information.

Please read and follow the instructions in the product manual. Proper fit of the collar is important.  A collar worn for too long, or made too tight on the pet’s neck may cause skin damage. This is called bed sores; it is also called decubitus ulcers. If not addressed, sores can worsen, turning into a condition known as pressure necrosis, or advanced bed sores.

Millions of pets are comfortable while they wear stainless steel contacts.  Some pets are sensitive to contact pressure. Some owners may make the collar too tight. You may find that your pet is tolerant of the collar. If so, you may relax some of these precautions.  It is important to continue checks of the contact area. If redness or sores are found, discontinue use. Wait until the skin has fully healed to use the collar. Resume following all precautions.

Pressure from the contacts can prevent proper blood flow to the skin and cause bed sores. Wet and dust can lead to an increased risk of skin irritation. Bed sores begin as redness of the skin. If left untreated, increased symptoms will occur. These can include hair loss in the affected area, oozing, sores, open sores and scab formation. Bacterial infection is common in advanced bed sores. See a veterinarian if you find open sores or an odor. Keep the area clean and dry to promote healing.

Bed sores are preventable. Proper collar adjustment is critical. Pressure is the primary cause. Perform daily checks of the contact area. Early detection is critical to prevent bed sores.  If you find redness during the inspection remove the collar. Wash and dry the pet’s neck, collar and contacts. Wait until all redness has cleared before placing the collar back on your pet.

Avoid leaving the collar on the pet for more than 12 hours in a day.  Moving the collar every 1 to 2 hours may help.  Moving the collar restores blood flow and allows mild irritation to heal.  This limit can not replace proper collar adjustment and checks of the contact area. If you observe redness in the contact area, stop using the collar immediately. Wash and dry the affected area, collar, and contacts.  Wait until the skin has fully returned to normal before resuming use of the collar.

These steps will help keep your pet safe and comfortable.  Failure to follow the procedures described may lead to advanced bed sores.  If the sore is small and closed, immediately stop using the product. Clean and dry the area and apply antibiotic ointment to the sore. Clean the collar and contacts.  If large or open sores appear, have your pet seen by a veterinarian. Discontinue use of the product until the affected area has healed.

Some descriptions of advanced bed sores or pressure necrosis describe the sores as looking like burns on the dog’s neck. Be assured that electronic collars do not use enough energy to create burns. The energy in an output pulse is less than a few thousandths of a Joule; it is similar in nature to the static pulse that you may feel when getting out of your car.

How do I fit the collar properly?
  1. Make sure the NoBark collar is off.
  2. Start with your dog standing comfortably.
  3. Place the collar high on your dog’s neck close to the ears. Center the contact points underneath your dog’s neck, touching the skin. Note: It is sometimes necessary to trim the hair around the contact points to make sure that contact is consistent.
  4. Check the tightness of the NoBark by inserting one finger between the end of a contact point and your dog’s neck. The fit should be snug but not constricting. Allow your dog to wear the NoBark for several minutes, then recheck the fit.
  5. Check the fit again as your dog becomes more comfortable with the NoBark.

Proper use tips:

  • Never leave the NoBark on for more than 12 consecutive hours.
  • For comfort, safety and effectiveness of this product, please ensure the following:
  • Check the fit to prevent excessive pressure by being able to insert one finger between a contact point and your dog’s skin.
  • Examine your dog daily for any signs of a rash or sore.
  • If a rash or sore is observed, discontinue the use of the NoBark for a few days.
  • If the condition persists beyond 48 hours, see your veterinarian.
  • Your dog’s neck and the contact points must be washed weekly with a wash cloth and mild hand soap, then rinsed thoroughly.

A condition called Pressure Necrosis, which is a devitalization of the skin due to excessive and prolonged contact against the contact points, may occur if the steps above are not followed. Read below for more on pressure necrosis.

How does it work?

The SportDOG NoBark effectively and humanely stops barking. The collar detects your dog’s barking and gives a correction, reminding him to stop barking. Most dogs quickly learn to stop barking when wearing the collar. The SportDOG NoBark 10R Collar uses several features designed to shorten the training phase and promote good behavior:

  • A patented sensor system provides the most reliable bark detection available. The unit delivers a static correction via
  • the contact points only if it detects BOTH vibration from the vocal cords AND the sound of the bark.
  • Three user-selectable modes allow you to choose how corrections are delivered:
  1. The patent pending Temperament Learning (indicated by green light, see mode chart for example on page 7) mode tracks the number of corrections needed to substantially reduce (and in most cases eliminate) the number of nuisance barks. The system provides 10 levels of static correction. It begins with a low-level correction (Level 0). However, if excessive barking continues, the correction intensity will increase with each successive bark until the barking stops. This correction level becomes the starting level the next time the dog barks. Once the dog has learned to reduce the barking, the initial warning corrections are reduced.
  2. In Progressive Correction mode (indicated by blue/green light, see mode chart for example on page 7), the correction starts at the lowest level and progresses to the next level (to a maximum of Level 9) each time your dog barks within 30 seconds of the previous bark. If your dog does not bark again within 30 seconds, the correction will be reset to the lowest level (Level 0).
  3. In the User-Selected Correction mode (indicated by blue light, see mode chart for example on page 7), the user presets the correction level (0-9) that will be used every time the dog barks.

Note: As a built-in safety feature, if your dog barks 15 times or more within a 80 second period, the NoBark 10R will automatically shut off for 3 minutes. This safety feature is active in all three modes of operation.

How long will it take for my dog to stop barking?

You should notice a reduction in your dog’s barking within the first couple of days that he wears the NoBark. At this point, it is important to remember the learning process is still not complete. Dogs will “test” the new learning experience and will increase their attempts to bark. This usually occurs during the second week a dog wears the NoBark. If this does occur, remain consistent and do not alter your use of the NoBark. You must place the NoBark on your dog in every situation when you expect him to be quiet. If your dog is not wearing the NoBark, he may resume barking and his learning would suffer a setback.

How long will the battery last?

The average charge will last 3-6 months. Battery icon on the display indicates 1 bar or less and/or the light flashes red 3 times every 5 seconds when the battery is low. Battery life is dependent on the number of corrections the dog receives. Due to greater use during a dog’s training, the first battery charge may not last as long as future charges. Replacement Battery: RFA-228.

Is the NoBark safe and humane?

Yes. The NoBark is designed to get your dog’s attention, not to punish him. The correction is just strong enough to remind him to stop barking. However, some dogs may be startled by the first correction. To reduce this, take these steps during the first use: Place the NoBark properly on your dog and wait nearby until he barks. Most dogs will understand quickly that the NoBark is disrupting their urge to bark and will relax and stop barking. Because the correction may be surprising or startling at first, some dogs may bark more at the initial correction.

On rare occasions, a dog may get into a bark-correction-bark-correction cycle. If this happens, reassure your dog with calm, soothing tones. As your dog relaxes, he will understand that if he becomes quiet, he will not receive more corrections. Of the few dogs that have this reaction, it usually occurs only the first time they wear the NoBark.

Will another dog that is barking cause the bark control collar to accidentally correct my dog?

The NoBark 10R collar detects both the vibration of your dog’s vocal chords and the sound of his unique bark. These collars won’t activate if they only detect the sound of another dog’s bark.

Will my dog stop barking completely?

The NoBark effectively and humanely stops barking when it is worn. It should only be worn during periods of unwanted barking.

Will the NoBark work for my dog?

The NoBark is safe and effective for all breeds and sizes of dogs, though it may be too large for dogs under 8 pounds to wear comfortably. Your dog should be older than 6 months and able to learn basic obedience commands.
